Symptoms

When you try to open a file from a network location in one of the Microsoft Office programs such as PowerPoint 2003 , Excel 2003, Publisher 2003 or a later version of them, the Office program may run very slowly or may appear to stop responding (hang).

Cause

This behavior may occur if the connection to the network location is lost during the time that your Office program is opening the file.

Important

Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. To work around this behavior, add the EnableShellDataCaching value to the Microsoft Windows registry. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Close your Office programs.

  2. Click Start, and then click Run.

  3. Microsoft office free download. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.

  4. Locate, and then click to select one of the following registry keys accordingly:

    • Office 365, Office 2019 and Office 2016:

  5. After you select the key that is specified in step 4, point to New on the Edit menu, and then click DWORD Value.

  6. Type EnableShellDataCaching, and then press ENTER.

  7. Right-click EnableShellDataCaching, and then click Modify.

  8. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.

    Note

    Any non-zero number in the Value data box will turn on caching. A zero number or blank (default) will turn off caching.

  9. On the File menu, click Exit to quit Registry Editor.

More information

This situation may occur after you click Open in the Open dialog box (on the File menu, click Open) to open a file from a network location (for example, a network server). During the process of opening the file, you lose your network connection or the network location that contains the file that you are trying to open goes down. During the process of opening the file, your Office program tries to add the file name and the path information of the file that you are trying to open to the Windows recent file list. Because the network location (path) does not now exist, the Office program may run slowly and may appear to stop responding (hang).

This situation may also occur if your connection to your network is slow because your Office program has to make multiple queries to the network to obtain the correct file information.

In Office 2011 for Mac, Excel can try to load tables from a Web page directly from the Internet via a Web query process. A Web query is simple: It’s just a Web-page address saved as a text file, using the .iqy, rather than .txt, file extension. You use Word to save a text file that contains just a hyperlink and has a .iqy file extension. Excel reads that file and performs a Web query on the URL that is within the .iqy text file and then displays the query results.

You can easily make Web queries for Microsoft Excel in Microsoft Word. Follow these steps:

  1. Go to a Web page that has the Web tables that you want to put in Excel.

  2. Highlight the Web address in the address field and choose Edit→Copy.

  3. Switch to Microsoft Word and open a new document.

    Launch Word if it’s not open already.

  4. Choose Edit→Paste.

    The URL is pasted into the Word document.

  5. In Word, choose File→Save As.

    The Save As dialog appears.

  6. Click Format and choose Plain Text (.txt) from the pop-up menu that appears.

  7. Type a filename, replacing .txt with .iqy as the file extension.

    Don’t use the .txt extension. The .iqy file extension signifies that the file is a Web query for Microsoft Excel.

    If you encounter the File Conversion dialog, select the MS_DOS radio button, and then click OK.

  8. Select the Documents folder.

  9. Click the Save button.

After you save your Web query, follow these steps to run the Web query:

  1. Open Excel.

  2. Choose Data→Get External Data→Run Saved Query.

  3. Open the .iqy file you saved in Word.

Excel attempts to open the Web page for you, which creates a query range formatted as a table. Web queries work with HTML tables, not pictures of tables, Adobe Flash, PDF, or other formats. The fancy Web query browser found in Excel for Windows is not available in Excel for Mac.

You can refresh a Web query quickly by first positioning the selection cursor anywhere in the data table and then choosing Data→Refresh Data.
